Press release:

More Gold than Beyonce.

The West Winds Gin “The Sabre” has won Champion Gin at the inaugural Australian Distilled Spirits Awards (ADSA) conducted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV).  The Champion Gin award and associated gold medal adds to the impressive treasure chest already amassed by the crew at The West Winds Gin which also includes Double Gold Medals at San Francisco in 2011 and 2013 for  “The Cutlass”, a Double Gold in New York in 2014 for “The Broadside” and locally, Champion Gin at the 2014 Royal Melbourne Fine Food awards and  the Best On-Premise spirit brand at the 2013 ALIA awards.

In the four years since The West Winds team launched their Margaret River based gin to the world, the Australian distilling landscape has seriously developed into a world class act with amazing styles being produced by a range of high quality producers. According to Jez Spencer, The West Winds Head of Sales, Booze, and Buccaneering...

“We love the smaller of the swords, The Sabre. It's our tip of the hat to the great Gin houses of old  and a well balanced introduction to the London dry  styles – which we often describe as the missionary position of gins...not overtly complex but satisfying nevertheless.  Drink it with tonic, lots of ice and fresh lemon or in your favourite citrus based gin cocktail...as for the Champion Gin award, well, it's incredibly exciting and humbling to be recognised again for the high  quality of our Gins by such solid luminaries. Respect.”

About the Awards

The ADSA awards this year were judged by head judge Nick Stock and included President of the Malt Whisky Society of Australia, Craig Daniels; Vernon Chalker, founder of Melbourne's Gin Palace, and Bombay Sapphire's Sebastian Reaburn.

About The West Winds Gins:

Originally created in the 17th century by the Dutch, gin was initially favoured for its medicinal qualities. In the time since, this magic tonic has been developed, refined and improved with more and more exotic ingredients added to its juniper core.

Hailing from Margaret River and using the pristine rain water gathered there, The West Winds Gin has blazed a path across the world for Australian gin with stockists now in countries such as Canada, Hong Kong, France, UK and Andorra.

The West Winds Gins are gin lovers gins, set apart by utilising native botanicals like wattle seed and bush tomato and the pristine waters of Margaret River in Western Australia. We named our Gin “The West Winds” in a tribute to the ocean breezes used for centuries by sailors to cross the Indian Ocean from South Africa to the west coast of Australia and beyond in a search for the riches of the new world.
